Timotheus Vermeulen is a full professor of media, culture and society at the University of Oslo, Norway. In 23/24 he was a visiting scholar in history of art and architecture at Harvard University, USA. He was co-founder of the influential webzine Notes on Metamodernism, is co-editor of the book series Studies in Metamodernism (Bloomsbury), joint director of the Media Aesthetics Research Group, and a regular contributor to public discourse. From 2023 to 2025 he hosted the popular podcast of ideas The Cluster F Theory together with Radio & TV presenter Gia Milinovich.

Vermeulen publishes widely on media, cultural and aesthetic theory. His latest book, Plastic Time: Gesture on Screen, is forthcoming with SUNY later this year. His work is translated into over 10 languages including Chinese, Russian, Spanish, German, Korean, Portuguese, and Turkish. It is cited widely, including discussions in popular media such as the New York Times, Zeit, TLS, BBC Radio, Adbusters, Scenario, and Frieze; and inspired numerous symposia, special issues and exhibitions, including a 2013 issue of The American Book Review, a 2016 issue of English Studies, a 2023 dossier for Screen, and most recently an issue of Acta Philologica, along with exhibitions in Berlin, London, Moscow, and New York.

Vermeulen is a frequently invited keynote speaker at academic conferences, public events and the media, including The Venice Biennale, Documenta, State of Fashion, Frieze Art Fair, E-Flux, The Stedelijk Museum, CAFA Beijing, Summit at Sea, Columbia University GSAPP, MIT, and Harvard. He has served on numerous committees and juries for art prizes, including Coast Contemporary, the Nam Jun Paik Award and the Bonner Kunstpreis; and he is a board member of the Artbook Fair in Oslo.
